Sustainability

Sustainability is built into what our technology does. Contributing to a sustainable society is part of Smart Eye's strategy — and part of how we operate.

In automotive, our sustainability work centers on saving lives and improving mobility. In behavioral research, it helps academia and industry understand how people engage with technology, experiences, and content.

Our 2025 Sustainability Report follows EFRAG’s voluntary VSME standard and is built on a double materiality assessment: a structured review of where our operations and the people and environment connected to them have the most impact. This page summarizes that work.

Our sustainability management system

External Standards

We are guided by EFRAG's VSME reporting standard and align with internationally recognized frameworks on human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption. Our contribution is most direct where our technology reduces harm — safer roads and safer, better-informed research.

Internal governance

Our sustainability work is governed by group-wide policies, clear areas of responsibility, and targets we monitor. The Board approves the materiality assessment and oversees strategy and targets; the CEO owns execution; the CFO ensures reporting is accurate and compliant; and the Head of Quality Management maintains our processes and certifications. Policies are reviewed annually. Smart Eye operates an ISO 9001 certified quality management system and is certified under TISAX, the automotive information-security standard based on the principles of ISO/IEC 27001.

Our sustainability pillars

Smart Eye’s mission is to achieve sustainable progress through science and technology. Saving lives is a sustainable effect of the products we build.

Our work is organized around three pillars:

  • Responsible Innovation — acting by ethics, law and data privacy, and holding our partners and suppliers to the same standard.
  • People — a learning-focused, inclusive organization where people are proud of the work and its impact.
  • Environment — continuously reducing our footprint, small as it is, because everyone has a part to play.

Responsible Innovation

To be a credible partner to customers, employees and society, we hold ourselves to high ethical standards — and ask the same of the people we work with.

Our Code of Conduct sets our position on integrity, customer privacy, and zero tolerance for corruption and discrimination. Concerns can be raised anonymously through our whistleblower function.

Because our software is built with machine learning, we work to reduce algorithmic and data bias — training and validating on a large, diverse dataset spanning more than 90 countries so it performs fairly across cultures and contexts.

Our software processes anonymous behavioral data in real time and doesn’t store sensitive information. We advocate for its use in safe and sustainable applications, and assess business against international embargoes.

Personal data is handled strictly under applicable law, with clear ownership for data protection and GDPR compliance across product development and IT systems.

Business is conducted transparently and recorded accurately, with financial and sustainability reporting compliant with applicable regulations.

Our hardware uses components from established technology partners, assembled by suppliers in Sweden and China; iMotions resells sensors from recommended partners. We expect partners and suppliers to meet the standards in our Supplier Code of Conduct.

How we aim to ensure responsible innovation

Act responsibly

by ethics, law and data privacy — and expect the same of partners and suppliers.

Reduce bias

in our data and products through ethical development.

Deploy our technology

ethically with opt-in and consent from end users.

People

Our progress rests on our people. As of 31 December 2025, Smart Eye had 277 employees and 26 consultants, based in Sweden, Egypt, Denmark, the United States, Japan, Germany, China and the United Kingdom.

Diversity and an inclusive culture make both our technology and our company better. We work to improve gender balance through recruitment that ensures diverse candidate pools and by monitoring balance across roles, and we maintain a respectful culture with zero tolerance for discrimination.

We’re a learning-focused organization where people are encouraged to solve problems together. Our values — human, groundbreaking, perseverance, ethical — shape a culture of open communication, and we check in regularly through employee surveys and development reviews.

How we aim to embrace people

No discrimination or harassment

We respect each other.

Equal opportunities

We avoid prejudice and promote equal rights.

We take care of each other

Communicating openly and respecting cultural norms.

Environment

Our total environmental impact is small, but we’re convinced everyone must contribute — and we work systematically to reduce ours.

Our footprint comes mainly from energy use in our offices and development work, hardware manufacturing by partners, IT systems, and business travel. We track emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3, aim to use renewable energy where available, and hold meetings digitally when travel isn’t necessary. Our ambition is to set climate targets toward net-zero emissions.

Hardware volumes are low, so transport emissions are limited, and we encourage recycling of all hardware at end of life. Our urban offices let many employees commute by public transport, bike or on foot — and our Gothenburg HQ offers a bicycle benefit with parking and shower facilities.

How we aim to preserve the environment

Consider energy consumption

Favor green energy and digital meetings.

Reduce travel emissions

Weigh environmental impact, not just cost.

Recycle

Provide local recycling guidance with shipped hardware.

Going forward

Sustainability is an area of constant effort. Having moved to formal reporting under the VSME standard and a double materiality assessment, we’ll continue to monitor our progress, set and refine targets, and update our work as our operations and the regulatory landscape evolve.
